Please join us in welcoming Brendan Lyon to the Engineering team as the newest Sr. Software Engineer!
Brendan joins us with experience in both front end and back end software engineering, technical leadership, and system design/software architecture. Previously, he led a team in designing and building a modern web development framework while also maintaining an enterprise ecommerce platform.
In his role here at Teslar Software, Brendan will be working on the development of new software as well as improving and correcting user experience with our current offerings.
We chatted with Brendan and asked him a few “getting to know you” questions to help us get better acquainted:
What’s your favorite movie or book?
I think I'd have to say Interstellar. I'm a big fan of sci-fi and space travel, and Interstellar combines that with a fantastic story that rips your heart out every time. The art style being grounded in modern technology is also another great aspect; grounded sci-fi and retrofuturism are really fun concepts. An honorable mention for favorite movie - John Wick. The Red Circle scene is my favorite action scene of all time.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
100% a night owl. My brain seems to work opposite from normal - I feel more attentive as the day goes on, and usually I feel like I get my best work done late in the day. Until recently, it was not uncommon for my wife and I to stay up until 3am most nights! I'm still adjusting to a more normal sleep schedule since starting here, and I will say, it's nice to see sunlight for most of the day.
What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?
Last December my wife and I had our first child. As any parent will tell you, everything changed at that moment. I knew I wanted to be the best parent I could, and when he was born, I spent my paternity leave taking care of everything I could to make it as easy on my wife as possible while she recovered. It wasn't something anyone had to tell me to do; I knew what she would need me to do, and I was happy to do it. Some time later, my wife's parents were talking about that stretch of time and hearing their positive words and that I exceeded expectations as a new father was a rewarding moment for me. Parenthood is a whole lot of figuring it out as you go, and hoping you're doing it right, and hearing their praise was a huge validating moment that helped me feel more confident as a parent.
If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be?
There are so many things I'd love to be an expert in, but if I had to pick something, I think it'd be lutherie (the art of making and repairing stringed, typically wooden, musical instruments). I've been learning to build acoustic guitars for a couple of years now, and it's such a massive field with so many different techniques to learn and master. It's very satisfying to build something tangible, even more so when the result is something you can play and enjoy, and the detail and intricacy you can work into acoustic guitars means no two projects are the same. And as an added bonus, being an expert in lutherie sort of implies expertise in fine woodworking in general, so it's a win/win!
We are excited to have Brendan on the Teslar team!
